Diagnosis and the Importance of Camp

2013 was a challenging year. My husband and I had a baby in June, we moved to a new town in July, started new jobs and then our two year old (Elijah) was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in September. We felt so isolated and overwhelmed during that time. Parents caring for those with Type 1 Diabetes and children living with it are part of my tribe. When you meet another child or caregiver of someone with Type 1, you instantly feel connected. They know and understand the trials, frustrations, and exhaustion that can come from this chronic disease. Parents of Type 1 children just want their kid to just be like any other kid. Camp Hot Shots was our first opportunity getting to meet other young children and families navigating life with T1D.

Camp Hot Shots

I became involved in Camp Hot Shots in 2018. Elijah (6 years old at the time), was embarking on his first year at camp. I volunteered to help as a nurse and also got the opportunity to put my professional photography skills to use. It’s been such a joy to get witness the growth and friendships that naturally occur at camp. Seeing other kids (their struggles, how they manage highs/lows, and their triumphs) all going through the same thing is invaluable. Elijah looks forward to camp and being with his friends every year.
